Clubs mull e-ticketing to broaden fanbase
INCREASING concern over falling attendances at domestic football matches has driven several clubs in Phnom Penh to embrace the idea of e-ticketing to broaden their fanbase.
While some clubs have already taken a big step towards this digital avenue to attract fans in greater numbers, RSISA Plovtech, in collaboration with a UK company, is stepping forward to lend its technical exper- tise in introducing e-ticketing soon f or some Metfone C-League games to start with, with an open invitation for more clubs to join the network.
The corporate affairs manager at RSISA Plovtech, Heath Wyld, told The Post: “We are looking at ways to help these clubs generate revenue and at the same time make the games fan-friendly.”
“Our e-ticketing platform – www.oetps.com – will provide opportunities for clubs to sell their game tickets to fans across the country as well as the international audience looking to visit Cambodia for sports tourism,” Wyld said.
Dr Ken Gadaffi, managing director of RSISA Plovtech and an adviser to the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia, said: “It might be hard for some fans to get used to e-ticketing; however, it is important for clubs and event organisers in Cambodia to switch this mode, one that ensures easier access, tamper-proof tickets and guaranteed seating.’’
The benefits of e-tickets far outweigh the paper version. Tickets represent a key starting point for the fan-team relationship, and the way these are purchased and managed can make a big impact on the overall experience and enjoyment of a game, Gadaffi noted.
There has been a favourable response from some club owners, even as technical aspects and logistics are being worked out. The Cambodian National Competitions Committee (CNCC), which has oversight authority over all domestic competitions including the MCL, will also be part of ongoing discussions.
Although no timeframe has been set for the introduction of e-ticketing just yet, the system could well take off on a modest scale, with a limited number of clubs on board by the time the league season reaches the halfway stage.
