Sokpheng scores for Visakha on MCL return

- HS Manjunath

AFTER a disappointingly short stint in Malaysia, Keo Sokpheng has returned home to the most talked about club in the Metfone C-League – top-flight newcomers Visakha FC.

And the former Phnom Penh Crown forward got off to a sunny start with a first-half goal in Visakha’s 4-0 win over Electricite du Cambodge on Sunday.

By the time Sokpheng found the net, second from the bottom side EdC had shotgunned themselves in the foot on their home ground with two own goals.

A fourth-minute mishap saw Ry Phearun turn the ball into his own net, with Moul Daravoan repeating the act 14 minutes later.

Sokpheng stretched it to three and the evergreen Choe Myong-ho bagged the fourth in the 79th minute to help his side retain third spot in the table behind Boeung Ket and NagaWorld.

A brace by Roeung Bunheang fashioned Ministry of National Defense’s 2-0 win over Siem Reap-based Angkor Tiger to keep Army hopes alive of catching up with the leading pack of three.

It was yet another example of familiar failings on the part of the still winless Western Phnom Penh, who were no match for National Police in a 4-0 loss.

South Korean Kim Dong-yoo’s early goal was added to by Noun Borey, who struck twice in two minutes soon after the break. Western suffered again when Michael Rhoda added to the tally.

At the end of the first round of matches in the second phase, Boeung Ket lead the table by two points over Naga, with Visakha a hard-chasing third.
