Doctors detained for ‘malpractice’
POR SEN CHEY district police are preparing legal action against a husband and wife who are doctors after a patient allegedly died upon being treated at the Pheng Vuthy Medical & Maternity Clinic, which they own.
In the meantime, medical experts are said to be in the process of convening a meeting to examine the case.
District police chief Khem Saran told The Post that police were preparing the case on Tuesday and will send it to Phnom Penh Municipal Court for further action.
“Por Sen Chey police detained the suspects at the district office. The victim’s family came and collected the body, but we are unaware of what they did with it,” he said.
S a r a n s a i d t he v i c t i m received medica l t reat ment on Monday at the clinic located in Kbal Domrei II v illage, Ka kab commune, Por Sen Chey district.
The victim was identified as Wang Zhiqiang, 49, who lived in a guesthouse.
Saran said the victim took a tuk-tuk to the private clinic after suffering from fever and joint pain due to his arthritis.
After an examination, the doctors identified that he had dengue fever. He was given an IV injection and his condition returned to normal.
But soon afterwards, the victim’s condition changed. “The two doctors gave him oxygen and applied chest compressions, but the victim died,” Saran said.
Head of the forensics investigating committee Norng Sovanroath identified the doctor providing medical treatment to the patient as Li Xiao Yong, 39. He received training in China.
“We need to have a meeting with the forensics committee. We cannot inform you now. Initia lly, we can only say t hat t he v ict im died because he had dengue. [New] informat ion will be [revea led] later,” Saran said.
Sovanroath said the Pheng Vuthy Medical & Maternity Clinic, where the Chinese doctors worked, was registered under a Cambodian owner and has complied with all government requirements.
