Kandal police officers questioned over graft allegation­s against chief

SI X deput y police chiefs i n Kandal prov ince were questioned on Tuesday at t he Ministr y of Interior in relation to anonymous complaints against t he prov incia l police chief Eav Chamroeun, accusing him of 16 cases ranging from corruption to nepotism.

The si x deput y police chiefs included Roeun Nara, Ven Sov in, Chan Savoeun, Tob Sovann, Seng Kim Khorn, and Chhoeun Socheth. Each of them was questioned for an hour.

The clarificat­ion from the deputy police chief came following complaints filed by about fifty anonymous persons claimed to be the police officials under Chamroeun’s command.

They said Chamroeun had ta ken 50 per cent of t heir a llowance, occupied vehicles confiscate­d from crimes, and ta ken bribes of bet ween $2.000 and $ 3.000 in exchange for positions.

They also accused Chamroeun of ta k ing a monthly racketeeri­ng fee at cockfighti­ng rings and internet gambling and hav ing appointed his relatives at t he Cambodia-Vietnam bordercros­sing of fice.

Roeun Nara, one of t he six who were questioned said on Tuesday t hat he could not detail what he was asked because the case was in the process of f urt her investigat­ion.

He said he did not know who had filed complaints against his boss because the anonymous complainan­ts only submitted thumbprint­s.

Chamroeun said on Tuesday that he was unaware of those who filed complaints against him and that the investigat­ion by t he Ministr y of Interior had started on May 8 by a working team of inspectors.

However, he said he was not summoned by the ministry for questionin­g.

“It is at t he investigat­ion stage by a team of inspectors, and I cannot prov ide details. Let’s wait for t he results of t he investigat­ion,” Chamroeun said.

Ministry of Interior spokesman Khieu Sopheak on Tuesday said he did not have informatio­n on the case.
