Indian embassy outlines the events on offer for Internatio­nal Yoga Day

THE Indian embassy held a press conference presided over by Ambassador Manika Jain and Visothy So, undersecre­tar y of state at t he Ministr y of Tourism, on Friday to highlight events being held to celebrate t he 5t h Internatio­na l Day of Yoga on June 21.

Yoga, essentiall­y a spiritual discipline which focuses on bringing harmony between mind and body, originated in northern India around 5,000 years ago, the embassy said on Friday.

It uses techniques consisting of different postures – knows as asanas – and the training of the mind through breathing techniques and meditation. The continuous practice of yoga can lead to excellent physical and mental health and the attaining of self-realisatio­n.

Yogic practices were common among the followers of all the religions of ancient India, including Brahmanism and Buddhism.

The UN in December 2014 declared June 21 as Internatio­na l Day of Yoga to promote people's health and wellbeing across t he world.

Four editions of the Internatio­nal Day of Yoga have been successful­ly organised by the Indian embassy in collaborat­ion with the ministries of Tourism, and Education, Youth and Sport, with the embassy praising the government's support and its efforts in promoting yoga.

Participat­ion at previous yoga events was impressive, with the activity becoming increasing­ly popular due to its health benefits.

Yoga events will be held in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Sihanoukvi­lle and Battambang.

The major events will be held at Phnom Penh's Olympic Stadium on June 22 and in front of Angkor Wat on June 23. Two others will be held on Sihanoukvi­lle's Sokha Beach on June 22 and in front of Capital Hall in Battambang on June 23.

The events are free and open to everyone. Those wishing to take part should register in advance at register. smart.com.kh.

All doing so will receive a free yoga T-shirt sponsored by leading telecommun­ications service provider Smart Axiata.
