Vietnamese man in court for traffickin­g 31kg of drugs

ANTI-DRUG police sent a Vietnamese man to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court onThursday for allegedly traffickin­g in 31kg of drugs. He was arrested on Monday in Daun Penh district.

In Vietnam, local police arrested six Vietnamese suspects for allegedly traffickin­g in a total of 31kg of drugs from Cambodia.

In Song, the deputy director of the Anti-Drug Department, on Thursday identified the Vietnamese national as Nguyen Ngoc Qui.

He said police are investigat­ing whether Qui is linked to the drug traffickin­g case in Vietnam.

“Vietnamese authoritie­s also arrested suspects for traffickin­g 31kg of drugs. But we cannot say if they are part of the same group,” Song said.

He said police confiscate­d ketamine, methamphet­amine, a car and phone from Qui on Monday in Daun Penh district’s Chaktomuk commune.

Vietnamese media reported on Tuesday that 30 Vietnamese border officials in An Giang Province, which borders Cambodia’s Takeo province, arrested three Vietnamese nationals on June 13. They found 12kg of methamphet­amine in their possession.

Wi t h t h e i n f o r mat i o n obtained from the three suspects, Vietnamese authoritie­s arrested three more suspects and confiscate­d another 19kg of methamphet­amine on Monday. The suspects told authoritie­s they brought the drugs from Cambodia through Takeo province.

Meas Vyrith, the secretaryg­eneral of the National Authority for Combating Drugs (NACD), told The Post on Thursday that Vietnamese police had informed Cambodian officials about the matter.

He said Vietnamese officials would send their findings to Cambodia to assist in future investigat­ions.

“When they finish questionin­g those suspects and send the informatio­n to us, we will search for their syndicate members in Cambodia,” Vyrith said.
