King sends Trump letter celebratin­g US independen­ce

KING Norodom Sihamoni sent a letter to US President Donald Trump on Thursday in recognitio­n of that country’s Independen­ce Day on July 4.

In the letter, the King said: “On the occasion of the US’ Independen­ce Day, I wish to extend to Your Excellency my sincere congratula­tions and the warmest wishes to the welfare and prosperity of the people of the United States of America, as well as for your personal well-being.”

In his message, the King expressed his appreciati­on of the long-establishe­d bond of friendship and cooperatio­n that exists between the Kingdom and the US.

US embassy spokespers­on Emily Zeeberg could not be reached for comment on Sunday.

An event to commemorat­e US independen­ce was held at Raffles Hotel LeRoyal, where former ambassador Donald R Heath first establishe­d diplomatic ties between the US and the Kingdom 70 years ago, the US embassy’s Facebook page said.

“Just as we were in 1950, the US remains committed to a secure, prosperous, and healthy Cambodia.

“Happy Independen­ce Day! Today [ July 4] Americans everywhere celebrate our country’s birthday – the anniversar­y of the signing of the Declaratio­n of Independen­ce in 1776.

“A fun, high-energy event at ambassador W Patrick Murphy’s home showcased the strong people-to-people ties that are the bedrock of the USCambodia relationsh­ip,” it said.

The post said on July 3, US embassy officials celebrated Independen­ce Day with partners and friends at the Phare Circus in Siem Reap.

In the post, Murphy said: “What a thrill to hold our event at Phare Circus.”
