Thailand reports 70 new Covid infections

THAILAND’S Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration on February 28 reported 70 new cases, under 100 cases for the ninth consecutive day since the second wave began in December.

Of the 43 patients exposed to the disease while visiting highrisk areas, 39 were in Samut Sakhon province, followed by two in Pathum Thani, and one each in Chonburi and Nakhon Pathom.

Meanwhile, proactive testing led to the discovery of 19 cases – 10 in Samut Sakhon and nine in Pathum Thani.

Of the eight overseas travellers found to be infected in quarantine facilities, seven were Thais who had returned from the UAE, Germany, Switzerland and the US. A Canadian who came from his home country was the other patient in quarantine.

Meanwhile, 106 patients have recovered and been discharged.

As of February 28, the number of confirmed cases in Thailand had risen to 25,951. Of these, 23,181 had been contracted locally, including 14,517 who were found via proactive testing, while 2,770 were returnees. So far, 25,128 have recovered and been discharged, 740 patients are still in hospitals, and 83 have died.

According to Worldometer, as of 0600 GMT on March 1, the number of confirmed cases globally had risen to 114.69 million (up by 8,702), 90.25 million have recovered, 21.89 million are active cases (90,307 in severe condition) and 2.54 million have died (up by 561).

Thailand ranks 114th on the global list of most cases, which is topped by the US with 29.26 million, followed by India 11.11 million, Brazil 10.55 million, Russia 4.25 million and the UK 4.18 million.
