P Sihanouk keeps 3 factories shut

THE Preah Sihanouk provincial authoritie­s have temporaril­y suspended the operations of three factories in two special economic zones for another week from May 26 to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Two of the factories – Cambodian Everwin Express and Prowood (Cambodia) Flowering – are located in the Preah Sihanouk Special Economic Zone on National Road 4 in Prey Nop district’s Bit Traing commune.

The other factory is Xie Cheang Home Furnishing­s, located in the Jejiang Gorji Special Economic Zone on National Road 4 in Prey Nop district’s Choeung Kor commune.

In a decision dated May 25, the provincial administra­tion said it had found positive cases after suspending the factories prior to the extension to collect samples for Covid-19 testing.

“According to the working group of the provincial Department of Labour and Vocational Training, there are still people who have been in contact with Covid-19 patients in the factory,” it said.

On May 24, the provincial administra­tion also temporaril­y suspended the operation of

the Sismed Cambodia Healthcare product factory located in the Preah Sihanouk Special Economic Zone from May 25 after more workers tested positive for Covid-19.

Provincial hall spokesman Kheang Phearum told The Post on May 26 that the working group continued to collect specimens of workers who had been exposed to Covid-19.

In neighbouri­ng Koh Kong

province, the authoritie­s on May 25 temporaril­y closed a number of tourist attraction­s including Nesat Beach and Kong Kang Beach in Chroy Svay commune; Koh Khyang in Chi Khor Krom commune; Stung Popok in Sre Ambel district’s Dang Peng commune; and Chi Phat community-based ecotourism site in Thma Bang district’s Chi Phat commune.

In a decision dated May 25,

the administra­tion said the areas had been determined as Covid-19 hotspots. The decision takes effect from May 26 until further notice.

“Taxis are banned from transporti­ng people to and from Sre Ambel district for a week, while truck drivers and their assisatant­s will need to undergo rapid test for Covid-19 regularly and will not be allowed to enter the market,” it said.
