New Phnom Penh flyovers to break ground by end of Aug: Koeut Chhe

PHNOM Penh Capital Hall plans to start construction of two more flyovers by the end of this month in a bid to reduce traffic congestion in the capital.

One of the projects will be an interchange at the triple intersection of Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (better known as Street 271), and Monivong boulevards.

The other will connect Por Sen Chey district’s Russian Federation Blvd and Samdech Chaufea Veang Kong Sam Ol Blvd, commonly known as Street 2004.

Phnom Penh deputy governor Koeut Chhe told The Post on August 22 that a team of specialists are currently assessing the projects before sending a report to the leadership for review. However, he expects that groundbreaking for their construction will take place at the end of this August.

“Specialists are preparing a report for the governor, which will then be sent to the prime minister for approval,” he said.

He said the two projects will contribute significantly to reducing traffic congestion in the capital, which in turn will reduce residents’ cost of living, among others.

“It is easily noted that the Chaom Chao interchange and the Stung Meanchey flyover, for example, have saved commuters and travellers a lot of time, and consequently saved them a lot of gas,” he said.

He added that the Phnom Penh administration will continue to assess which other parts of the city would benefit from such projects.

You Sunlong, Minister attached to the Prime Minister, and Phnom Penh deputy governor Nuon Pharoth inspected the site for the triple intersection interchange on August 19.

Currently, Phnom Penh has six flyovers in use. The seventh, the Russey Keo overpass, is under construction.
