S Reap announces winning model schools
TWO junior high schools and two primary schools were rated model schools out of nearly 100 in Siem Reap province. The model schools are now set to enter a national school competition in the future.
The provincial administration and education department announced the results of their assessment of nearly 100 primary schools and junior high schools which had entered a public service competition for educational institutions.
Ly Bunna, director of the provincial education department, said on December 12 that after the competition commission made the assessment, Khmer-Japanese Friendship Preahenkaosa Secondary School won first place and Angkor Thom Secondary School took second place in the contest.
He added that Wat Bo Primary School and Kravann Primary School were rated highly for providing model public services. The two schools were set to enter the national competition for good public service based on eight criteria for education.
“We provide scores and assessment to these model schools, in coordination with provincial authorities, the department of public service and relevant institutions.
“When we made these assessments, we allowed our units to strive to showcase accomplishments because this is important for our honour and quality of providing services. This assessment also inspired our students to study hard and it was a combination of our educational staff and communities,” he said.
Bunna hoped that the four schools would place highly at the national competition, saying the
provincial authorities and the four schools were ready to improve education in Siem Reap.
In a report on the assessment tools used to recognise good schools, the provincial administration said the eight criteria focused on public service standards, public service provision standards in education, public financial management in units, environmental preparations and improvement in the units, good relationships with residents, communities and development partners, addressing challenges with
residents and communities and new initiatives and innovations.
Chea Techsin, the principal of Angkor Thom Secondary School, said his school, located in Peak Sneng commune’s Peak Sneng Thmei village of Angkor Thom district, is now ready to enter the national competition after taking second place in the province.
He added that though the school is in the countryside, it is well organised with a clean environment. The school also has a dormitory and provides good meals for its students and even has a school bus for high school classes.
He continued that the school has a good relationship with partner development organisations such as the School for the Future and Happiness Organisation from Germany. He said taking second place for the province has made his teachers and students proud.
“We will continue to improve what is lacking, especially the roads to the school and to continue on in the national competition where we hope to receive an ever better rating,” Techsin said.
