Techo Sen Institute offers digital scholarships

- Hong Raksmey

THE Techo Sen Institute (TSI) – run by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport – and the Cambodia Academy of Digital Technology (CADT) under the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications have announced plans to offer a number of scholarships to high school graduates.

TSI held a January 14 open day to inform potential candidates about the scholarship opportunities available. The 50 students who score highest on the institute’s entrance exam will be offered a 100 per cent scholarship, while 50 per cent scholarships are available for female students.

Hoeun Samneang, rector of the institute, is committed to providing factual skills and broad knowledge through education. After graduating, students will have the ability to work as part of a team and will display the kind of character required by the leaders of tomorrow’s infrastructure, transportation and logistics industries, said a release by the public works ministry.

“To qualify for a 100 per cent scholarship with TSI, candidates must sit the third generation student exam online,” he was quoted as saying.

The six departments of TSI

include the faculties of Road, Highway, Bridge, Railway and Port Construction; Wastewater Treatment System; Economics and Land Transport Management; Logistics and Supply Chain Management; Ship’s Pilots; and Ship Engines.

Chanthorn Menghak, a high school graduate of E2stem Education, passed the high school examination with a D grade and has applied for a TSI scholarship to study economics and land transport management.

“This is a great opportunity

to acquire skills which will meet the demands of the employment market and match with my own interests. After graduation, many students have a chance to work with the ministry, which is great. In addition, the scholarship would help my family out a lot,” he told The Post.

The application deadline is February 1, and details can be found on the institute’s website.

The telecoms ministry also announced that it will offer up to 500 “Techo Digital Talent Scholarships” for bachelor’s

degree students.

Since 2020, Prime Minister Hun Sen has offered the scholarships – through the ministry – to those who study digital technology.

Last year, up to 250 outstanding students were selected for the programme.

This year, to celebrate the success of the programme, the ministry will offer up to 500 scholarships to students studying at the CADT, the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP), the Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC) and the American University of Phnom Penh (AUPP).

Heng Sokcheng, 20-year-old second-year student at CADT, said about 1,000 candidates had applied for the scholarships by January 16.

“All candidates must have obtained a grade of C or higher in last year’s high school exams. The exam will test their abilities in mathematics, physics and English. Poor students from remote areas, persons with disabilities and female students are encouraged to apply,” she explained.

Say Sophea, a foundation year academic officer at AUPP, said the 1,000 applications were split between CADT, RUPP, ITC and AUPP.

“AUPP receives the applications but conducts its own selection exam,” she added.

CADT offers scholarships for Bachelor Degree programmes in telecoms and networking, computer science and digital business, while RUPP offers them in computer science, telecoms and electronics and information technology.

ITC offers them in information and communication engineering, electronics and telecoms, while AUPP offers them in cloud computing, cybersecurity, software development and information technology management.
