Social security progress lauded by architect of new framework
SOCIAL affairs minister Vong Soth praised the progress of the National Social Protection Policy Framework 2030, designed to achieve equitable and inclusive economic growth.
Chan Narith – undersecretary of state at the Ministry of Economy and Finance and secretary-general of the National Social Protection Council (NSPC) – presented an update of the progress to the minister in a meeting on April 18.
Narith said the framework aims to further develop the national social protection system, which he said is an important factor in achieving sustainable and inclusive growth.
“Based on policies of macroeconomic stability and socio-economic development progress, the government introduced the 2016-2025 framework. It had successfully improved the public’s incomeprotection through more effective implementation of national social assistance programmes and social security,” he said.
Narith explained that in order to improve social protection, it is necessary to improve the framework.
“This is being done with the
guidance and coordination of the social protection council, in consultation with several state institutions,” he added.
Soth provided a number of inputs for the updated framework, which aligned with the council’s vision.
He expressed his admiration for the council’s commitment to ensuring that social protection systems are as progressive as possible.
“During the challenging period of the Covid-19 pandemic, the council was able to expand the coverage of social protection for the people. It was able to prevent people from suffering financially during the crisis,” he said.
He noted widespread public approval of the government’s cash support programmes, both for those affected by the pandemic and for new mothers.
