Sokha calls for establishment of nationwide night markets

- Van Socheata

DEPUTY Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sar Sokha urged capital and provincial governors to explore the creation of additional night markets, akin to Pub Street in Siem Reap, to entice more visitors to explore the provinces by implementing weekend markets.

“Kindly, governors, examine potential sites in the provinces to establish appealing spaces. This applies to Phnom Penh as well, given the numerous available locations for study. However, concentrate on two pivotal aspects—security and available parking. We must prevent traffic congestion, which could lead to dissatisfaction,” he said during unveiling of the National Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 last week.

“I propose commencing in early January 2024 to enhance the allure of our provinces, considering the dynamism in attracting tourists,” he said.

He added that, given the current inability to precisely forecast economic growth in 2024 and 2025, Cambodia must be robust in its efforts and carefully plan revenue and expenditures at the local level.

Long Dimanche, the deputy governor of Preah Sihanouk

province, said that choosing a site for establishing a night market poses no challenge for his tourist-centric province. He also stated agreement with the interior minister’s proposal.

“Preah Sihanouk province holds substantial potential for a weekend night market. This could be regarded as an expansion of the province’s tourism offerings, drawing additional national and international visitors on weekends,” he said.

In response to Sokha’s comments, Ho Vandy, a tourism

expert and adviser to the Cambodia Association of Travel Agents (CATA), endorsed the plan, stating it serves as a catalyst for enhancing domestic tourism. He noted the necessity of diversifying tourism sources, recognising that Cambodia should not solely depend on foreign tourists.

He added that historically, night markets were confined to a few prominent provinces. However, he observed the untapped potential in other provinces to arrange such markets,

appealing to both domestic and international visitors.

“Previously, only Phnom Penh and Siem Reap boasted numerous night markets, which are pivotal tourist attractions. Notably, the riverside night market in Phnom Penh has proven popular among both national and international visitors. Its appeal lies in the diverse and affordable products available, coupled with the added enjoyment of artistic and cultural performances,” he said.
