Towns gear up for New Year’s Eve countdown competition

- Sok Raksa

Prime Minister Hun Manet has instructed the Ministry of Tourism to collaborate with provincial administrations to establish and decorate locations for the countdown to New Year 2024, ensuring that revelers’ safety and security are maintained.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Japan-supported Choeung Ek Sewage Treatment Plant on December 27, Manet urged the ministry and administrations to create a joyful atmosphere for the public.

He said they should also seek support and sponsorship from private companies to host concerts, art performances, Kun Khmer boxing and other events.

The prime minister encouraged the ministry to coordinate with the National Committee for Clean City Evaluation to organise the “Best New Year’s Eve Countdown City 2024” competition, based on criteria such as security, safety, hygiene, environment, decoration, entertainment and public satisfaction.

“The administrations of the capital and provinces must maintain security, safety and public order and control the overall situation to prevent any attempts to cause chaos or social insecurity, especially during the New Year celebration,” he stated.

“The authorities must crack down on all kinds of gambling, drug offenses and any other negative activities that instil fear in the public, to ensure that people live in safety, both physically and mentally,” he added.

Ho Vandy, an advisor to the Cambodia Association of Travel Agents (CATA), noted that the prime minister’s recommendation for the celebration serves as an important reminder for provinces with potential tourism destinations.

“We have seen many decorations to welcome the New Year in various provinces, including light displays. I believe that in the three days leading up to the New Year, there will be an increase in people travelling across the country, both local and international visitors,” he stated.

He urged hotels, guesthouses and restaurants to offer their products and services honestly, avoiding exploitation during the holiday season.

“During the holiday, people travel with family. Therefore, they should not be overcharged, which affects their sentiment. I also urge all travellers to maintain cleanliness wherever they go and make those places sustainable tourism destinations,” he added.

Last year’s celebrations crowned Battambang town, Sihanoukville and Siem Reap town as the top three countdown cities.
