K Thom governor leads tree planting, green initiative

- Chea Sokny

KAMPONG Thom provincial governor Nguon Ratanak recently led the planting of over 60 young tree saplings in Stung Sen garden, situated along the namesake river. The new trees are expected to beautify the provincial town and attract more domestic and international visitors.

In a December 31 social media post, the provincial administration said the governor and representatives of the provincial authorities planted 62 tree species at the garden.

The governor said the new plants will ensure the longterm survival of many species, ensuring that future generations will be able to enjoy them.

In addition, they help to buffer the effects of storms, flood and other natural disasters.

“We planted the saplings to beautify the provincial town and bring fresh air, which could attract domestic and international visitors. Those who enjoy exercise will come to the park because the location is clean. There are all kinds of trees here. It is a great place for people to relax and take photographs,” he said.

He requested that the leaders and civil servants of the Forestry Administration in the province take care of the garden and continue to develop it.

Chhay Sivlin, president of the Cambodia Association of Travel Agents (CATA), said on January 2 that either flowers or trees were likely to contribute to an increase in tourism.

She added that often the best thing for the authorities to do is improve on existing features.

Sivlin explained that Kampong Thom is a province which is rich in culture, natural resources and beautiful landscapes. When people are heading to Siem Reap province, they usually pass through Kampong Thom.

“What the authorities in Kampong Thom are preparing sounds really good, as it will entice people who are passing through on the way from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap to stop for a brief visit. The administration’s plan will increase employment in the tourism sector and also boot incomes for local people,” she said.

According to her, the residents of the province now have the opportunity to expand their businesses. They should focus on providing services for Cambodian and international tourists.
