NCDM, WFP focus on disaster management
THE UN World Food Programme (WFP) in the AsiaPacific region is set to enhance collaboration with Cambodia, focusing on disaster risk management at both national and sub-national levels. The goal is to contribute to disaster risk reduction and ensure the safety of the people.
This commitment emerged from a January 31 meeting between Kun Kim, first vicepresident of the National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM), and John Aylieff, WFP regional director for Asia and the Pacific. The collaboration between the NCDM and WFP, ongoing since 1995, was emphasised during the discussion, as noted in an official statement on the NCDM’s social media.
Kim acknowledged the positive strides in disaster management capacity at both national and sub-national levels, attributed to the strengthened resources and techniques gained through cooperation with the WFP. He mentioned the progress achieved, especially in implementing activities outlined in the five-year strategic level agreement for the disaster risk management partnership in Cambodia.
“The government has effectively managed disaster risk by leading, coordinating and implementing cooperation with development partners, organisations and the private sector. It recognises that disaster management is a collaborative effort for the safety of people across sectors,” he said.
Kim said the NCDM’s priorities involve coordinating among ministries, humanitarian institutions, information management, climate risk analysis and early warning systems. This ensures the effective implementation of policies with high and effective outcomes.
During the meeting, Aylieff said the collaboration between WFP and NCDM has supported the execution of activities at every level.
“In collaboration with Cambodia, the WFP will commence the implementation of the new WFP Cambodia Country Strategic Plan for 2024-28,” he said.
The NCDM follows the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-30 and has a National Action Plan on Disaster Risk Reduction 202428, aligning with the national political programme of the National Assembly 2023-28.
