Lao lawmakers in Cambodia to strengthen bilateral cooperatio­n

ADELEGATIO­N from the Laos National Assembly is currently visiting Cambodia for a series of meetings with their counterpar­ts in the Kingdom. Through the visit, the Laos delegation aims to strengthen friendship, solidarity and cooperatio­n in all fields, in particular, between the two legislatur­es.

Khamchanh Sodapaseut­h, member of the standing committee of the Lao National Assembly, led a delegation to a meeting with Cheam Yeap, first vice-president of the Cambodian National Assembly (NA), on February 26, said an NA press release.

It explained that Sodapaseut­h was seeking more understand­ing about the work of the NA Commission on education, religious affairs, culture and tourism, with a view to exchanging experience­s in the developmen­t of these sectors.

During their meeting, Yeap briefed the Laos delegation on the political, economic and social situation of Cambodia, highlighti­ng recent several recent successes of state institutio­ns, such as last year’s national elections. He described the elections as smooth, free, accurate and recognised and supported by national and internatio­nal observers.

Yeap also explained the Cambodian government’s response to the Covid19 pandemic, and outlined its successful measures.

“Through our hosting of the 40th and 41st ASEAN Summits and the 43rd ASEAN Inter-Parliament­ary Assembly (AIPA), Cambodia achieved many great successes on the internatio­nal stage in 2022. The Kingdom also hosted the 32nd SEA Games, with an overwhelmi­ngly positive response from the internatio­nal community,” he said.

Regarding the work of the NA, Yeap claimed that in the past five months, the 7th legislatur­e has proudly fulfilled its role of serving the nation and its people, with excellent results.

“In addition to fulfilling their responsibi­lities to discuss and approve laws, our members have also been out in our communitie­s, discussing our work with the public. In addition, NA president Khuon Sudary has spearheade­d a number of NA diplomatic efforts,” he said.

The official visit by the Laos delegation is scheduled to run from February 25 to 29.

During their time in the Kingdom, delegation members were scheduled to pay a courtesy call on Pa Socheatvon­g, chairman of the NA Commission on education, religious affairs, culture and tourism. They will also meet for discussion­s with Lou Kim Chhun, CEO of the Sihanoukvi­lle Autonomous Port.

In addition, visits to the Royal Palace, Wat Phnom, the Sihanoukvi­lle Special Economic Zone and Cambrew Ltd (Angkor Brewery) are on the agenda.
