CPP ‘indispensable’ to the people: Bona

- Kim Yutharo

PEN Bona, chief of the Government Spokesperson Unit (RGSU), claimed that the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) has become the indispensable choice of the people, noting that the CPP has always received an overwhelming majority of votes.

He made the remarks via the RGSU’s social media on February 26, following the CPP’s landslide victory in the February 25 Senate election.

Bona explained that the results of the election of senators for the fifth term represented another great success for the CPP. The preliminary results show that the party, led by former Prime Minister Hun Sen, won 55 of the 58 available seats. In the 2023 general election, the CPP won 120 of the 125 National Assembly seats.

“The results of the last two elections reflect the historic success of the party. This did not happen by chance, but are the fruitful results of the ruling party’s efforts for the nation and its people,” he said.

He believes that leading the Kingdom to its highest level of development in the last 500 years of its history is “indisputable” proof, and a testament to the strength of the CPP-led government in the people’s eyes.

“Hun Sen, the strongman of Cambodia, is the greatest builder

of Cambodian history in modern times. He was not only a strong leader, but one who set policies that responded to the needs of the people, in line with global trends,” he said.

“This is reason enough for the CPP to be the only indispensable choice of the Cambodian people, both now and in the future” he added.

Seun Sam, an international relations researcher at the Royal Academy of Cambodia

(RAC), agreed with Bona, saying the voters who were eligible to elect members of the Senate were all elected commune councillors and members of parliament.

“It is perfectly normal for voters from any party to vote for their fellow party members. Of course, voters have the right to cast their ballot in any way they see fit, but they almost always support their own side,” he said.
