Minister lauds National Reading Day
MINISTER of Education, Youth and Sport Hang Chuon Naronemphasised the importance of cultivating a reading habit as a shining example for future generations, highlighting that it is fundamental in acquiring new ideas, knowledge and lifelong skills.
On the occasion of the 9th National Reading Day, themed “Reading is the foundation of all in life” on March 11, the minister remarked that reading significantly contributes to enhancing the quality of life and progress in Cambodia.
“Research indicates that fostering a reading culture enhances mental health, reduces stress and contributes to youthfulness, thoughtfulness, knowledge and creativity, as well as modern and innovative ideas, thereby enriching educational ideals,” he stated.
“Ceasing to engage in mentally stimulating activities like reading can lead to brain inactivity and cellular decline. Reading, conversely, stimulates new cell growth and improves brain function, making one feel younger,” he explained.
Chuon Naron noted that the day serves as an opportunity to pass on knowledge to
future generations, inspiring them to pursue research and develop their writing skills.
Kong Samneang, president of the Federation of Education Services in Cambodia, expressed support for the
ministry’s initiative, particularly in inspiring reading and promoting education.
“Cambodia’s reading landscape is progressively improving, thanks to the ministry, partner organizations and
educational institutions focusing on this area. However, it’s vital to continue strengthening these efforts, especially in supporting students in remote and rural areas to broaden their understanding
and knowledge,” he said.
National Reading Day 2023 was held under the theme “Reading as a Path to the Evolution of the Education Sector,” and attracted over 30,000 participants.
