All BC Communities are Mining Communities

Mining helped build British Columbia into the province it is today. For generations, mining has been a critical source of jobs, community development and prosperity in every region of our province. What is the benefit to the

City of Surrey? In 2018 alone, 190 companies sold more than $111 million in goods and services to the mining industry. Surrey is, in fact, one of the biggest benefactors of BC’S mining industry.

The benefits of mining continue across the province. The industry generates:

• $12.3 billion in economic activity;

• 33,000 + direct and indirect jobs; and

• $1 billion in direct payments to government to support healthcare, education and public services.

The gains can be seen in both urban as well as rural communities. In fact, 34% of the 3,730 Bc-based businesses that supply materials, goods and services to the mining industry are in Metro Vancouver. These Bcbased companies generated nearly $1 billion in economic activity for the Lower Mainland, supporting jobs and families throughout the region, including Surrey. Today, the mining industry, and the local businesses that support it, continue to be foundational to our province’s economy while providing the minerals and metals we all depend on – essential products that are integral to the global transition to a lower carbon economy.
