CALL FOR YOUTH AND BUSINESS PARTICIPANTS: Surrey Youth Entrepreneur Team
The Surrey Board of Trade invites interested individuals (youth and business) to join our Youth Entrepreneur Team, which carries out the Youth Entrepreneur and Advocacy Action Plan (YEAAP). Fundamentals of YEAAP:
1. It is an economic and social imperative to address youth unemployment challenges
2. Boosting youth enterprises deliver substantial benefits both for the entrepreneur and for the economy
3. Entrepreneurship is not for everybody, but for many it can provide a long-term route out of poverty
4. Making entrepreneurship work is not the responsibility of one sector alone - it requires dedicated actions from all sectors of the community 5. Young people are encouraged and supported to take advantage of the opportunities of entrepreneurship
While some programming and collaborative activity has existed, the YEAAP creates structure in the overall Surrey Board of Trade objective on the workplace development strategies for youth. To join, please contact Melissa Peel, melissa@businessinsurrey.com
In 2020, the Honourable Marie-claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-food, announced the creation of the Canadian Agricultural Youth Council to help bolster Canada’s strong agenda for agriculture and agri-food and continue to build diversity across the agricultural sector.
25 members were selected from over 800 applicants from across the country to share their perspectives on the future of the sector last Fall. As a whole, the Federal Government is working to develop a green economic recovery plan, with young people being able to share their aspirations. Over the course of forthcoming meetings, their perspectives will help articulate Canada’s vision and the programs that will result from it, leading to a sustainable and prosperous agriculture and agri-food sector.
Canada’s agricultural sector is an important driver of economic growth, responsible for one in eight jobs in Canada. The sector contributes over $143 billion to our gross domestic product and over $66 billion in agri-food exports.
Discussions at the inaugural meeting focused on various issues, including the future of the sector, sustainable agriculture, rural vitality, skills and labour, and mental health. Over the coming months, the Council will also meet with policy leaders, as well as senior departmental officials.
Members will have the opportunity to offer suggestions on government priorities, as well as to identify problems and propose solutions on a wide range of important issues, all while developing leadership skills and building professional relationships. They will help advise the Minister and the Department on agriculturerelated policies and programs that are important to them.
