“It all started with a post on Apartment Therapy – something about jazzing up your rental with tiles glued on plywood. So once I knew I’d be in Lisbon, I thought: Yes, I will acquire tiles and I will
craft. I came across Surrealejos, Luca Colapietro’s workshop, on the cusp of the hilly, historic Alfama neighbourhood. After moving to the city three years ago, the Italian art director became obsessed – ‘kidnapped,’ to use his word – by the azulejos, or tiles; some of his surreal designs even came to him in a dream. Traditional graphic elements are swapped out for living ones like eggplants, anatomical hearts, saintly foxes and pandas, and, of course, sardines – my choice, as these tiles will (eventually) live in my kitchen. It’s a real ceramic menagerie.” « Tout a débuté par un article d’Apartment Therapy sur la façon d’égayer son appart en collant des carreaux sur du contreplaqué. Quand j’ai su que j’allais à Lisbonne, je me suis dit : «Je vais acheter des carreaux et bricoler. » J’ai découvert Surrealejos, l’atelier de Luca Colapietro, à l’orée du quartier ancien et vallonné d’Alfama. Installé en ville depuis trois ans, ce directeur artistique italien s’est trouvé obnubilé (« kidnappé », selon ses dires) par les azulejos ; certains de ses motifs surréalistes lui sont même venus en rêve. Les éléments graphiques traditionnels y sont remplacés par des éléments vivants, tels que des aubergines, des coeurs de planche anatomique, des renards et pandas transformés en icônes religieuses et, mon choix pour orner ma cuisine, des sardines. C’est une véritable ménagerie en céramique. »
