TC Media loses ‘courageous leader’ to cancer

-

Kevin McIntosh, a long-time journalist and key figure in the digital transformation of TC Media newsrooms, died Tuesday in hospital in Halifax.

McIntosh, 64, had cancer and just retired last month after an active and busy career. At the time of his retirement, he was the content director for TC Media’s Atlantic and Saskatchewan newspapers, which includes the Kings County Advertiser and Register.

McIntosh was a graduate of Conestoga College in Kitchener, Ontario. He began his journalism career at the Guelph Mercury in February 1973. Later, after a short stint at the Kitchener Record, he joined the Windsor Star where he had a long career.

In 1979, while with the Star, he was a finalist for a Michener Award for public service journalism.

He joined Transcontinental during the first decade of the 2000s. In one of his duties with Transcontinental, he served as editor of the Halifax Daily News.

McIntosh once joked that one of his career highlights was sharing a beer with Billy Carter, U. S. President Jimmy Carter’s colourful and controversial brother.

Julia Kamula, senior vice-president, local solutions, Atlantic region and Saskatchewan, says McIntosh had a profound impact on the TC Media editorial teams.

“He was a courageous leader, with a wicked sense of humour and a passion for our industry and journalism that went unparalleled. Kevin led the digital transformation of our newsrooms and was a key member of TC Media’s senior management team. He will be missed.”

McIntosh is survived by his wife Janice, a son Jason McIntosh (husband Jim Shaffer) and granddaughter Norah; and a daughter, Sarah McIntosh, and grandson, Calix Holt. He is also survived by his mother, Kathleen McIntosh, in Ontario, a broth- er Jim and a sister Mary.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Ontario.
