Several ECMA nods for Kings County musicians

- By Wendy Elliott -

Several East Coast Music Award nominations came Kings County’s way recently.

Two Acadia University music professors, Derek Charke and Mark Adam, were selected in the classical category. The Kitchen Party album they worked on together has four nominations in the composition category as well.

Charke won the 2012 Juno Award for Classical Composition of the Year for his work, Sepia Fragments, and the 2013 ECMA for classical composition of the year for his work, Between the Shore and the Ships.

The Hupman Brothers’ album, Black River Blues, received a nod in the blues recording of the year category. Ryan and Scott Hupman captured the same category in 2010.

The Union Street Café in Berwick was nominated as venue of the year.

Glenn McMullen and his firm, Sound of Pop, now has its sixth ECMA nomination - this time for music merchant of the year. In 2010 and 2011, the Wolfvillebased firm was nominated for record label of the year, followed by a 2012 nomination for company of the year. Founded in 2001, Sound of Pop’s primary focus is pitching music for film, TV and advertisements, in addition to managing a band from New Brunswick, The Playdates, and running a small, independent record label.

Canning’s Laura Roy co-wrote a song called Blinders that was nominated in the Electronic Music category. It features her on vocals. Blinders was picked up this past summer by Tommy Boy Productions in New York and peaked at 15 on the USA DJ Dance and House Charts.

Roy has moved to Toronto, where she is writing and producing a new release of songs for spring. She has a manager in New York now and will perform again at Canadian Music week in Toronto in May. At a Kitchen Party Charke said he was very excited that four of the five nominations for classical composition are from Kitchen Party.

Producer Mark Adam released Kitchen Party last February at the Acadia New Music Festival, Shattering the Silence.

It was created in an intimate musical setting unique to Eastern Canada over the course of three hours on a snowy Sunday afternoon in the winter of 2013.

The compositions that were nominated are Reel Variations by Charke, Third Duo by Anthony Genge, Capriccio by John Plant and Dream Kitchen by adjunct Acadia professor Steven Naylor.

Performers on the album included Charke, Adam and another music professor, Jeff Hennessy, who also wrote a tune on the album.

Eastlink East Coast Music Week will place in St. John’s, NL from April 8-12. The event brings together internationally renowned musicians and industry professionals for five days of performances, conferences, and a gala award show.
