Hoop Axewomen split weekend, men go 0-2

-

The hoop Axewomen picked up their second straight win Jan. 30 after a 77-72 victory over UNB, but a Jan. 31 loss meant the women ended up splitting the weekend.

Acadia led pretty much the entire game in earning a five-point win Jan. 30. The Axewomen led 22-18 after one quarter and 39-35 at halftime after each team scored 17 points in the second quarter.

Acadia led by as many as 14 during the third quarter, which ended with the Axewomen ahead 64-51. UNB won the fourth quarter 21-13, reducing the deficit down to three, 75-72 with 20.8 seconds left.

The newest Axewoman, Paloma Anderson, stemmed the UNB tide, hitting a pair of free throws to round out the scoring. Anderson led all scorers with 23 points for Acadia, including 9-10 from the foul line, and also added five rebounds and four steals. Allie Berry had a huge game for Acadia, finishing with 18 points and 17 rebounds.

The Axewomen also got double-figure scoring from Chanel Smith (12 points, two threes) and Aprille Deus (11 points). Jenalle VanHie had seven points and 10 boards.

The next night, however, UNB emerged the victors in another tight matchup.

The Axewomen struggled to find the back of the net in the first quarter. Acadia was able to tighten its defence to win the second and third, but in the fourth, UNB reclaimed the lead in the 58-55 victory.

Anderson again had a strong performance, with 17 points and seven steals, while Berry added 13 points and 13 rebounds for Acadia. Katie Ross and Chanel Smith chipped in eight each.

The Axemen, meanwhile, were downed twice by the top-ranked UNB squad, losing 79-74 on Jan. 30 and 77-67 on Jan. 31.

On Jan. 30, Acadia led by the slimmest of margins, 22-21 after one quarter. UNB won the second quarter 19-13 for a 40-35 halftime lead. The Varsity Reds then won the third quarter 20-15 to lead 60-50 after 30 minutes.

Acadia won the fourth quarter 24-19, managed to tie the score twice, first at 64 and then at 67, and trailed by just two points 76-74, in the final seconds before UNB clinched the win at the free throw line.

Sean Stoqua led all scorers with 24 points for Acadia, a performance that included four threes, 6-6 free throws and three steals. Shaquille Smith added 18 points, and Thomas Johnston and Nick Ernest each had nine rebounds.

On Jan. 31, Acadia had a one-point advantage after the first quarter, thanks to the efforts of Smith, who had six points in the opening frame and ended up finishing the game with 12 points and five rebounds. The Axemen went on to win the second and third quarters, but couldn’t recover from an 8-0 run by UNB.

Stoqua added 11 points to Acadia’s scoresheet, while Ben Miller and Rhys Larry picked up 10 points each in the loss.

Hockey Axemen remain in second

Brett Thompson’s goal midway through the second period was all that was needed for Acadia to win against Moncton Feb. 1.

The 1-0 game helped the Axemen hold onto second place in the AUS standings.

Thompson’s goal, off the stick of Sam Fioretti and Geoff Schemitsch, was his 17th of the season. Brandon Leier had the win for the Axemen, stopping all 37 shots he faced.

The Axemen have two games remaining in the regular season, both scheduled for this coming weekend at home. Acadia will host Dalhousie on Feb. 6 and wrap up the regular season against St. FX the following evening.

Volleyball Axewomen lose 3-2 to Huskies

The Axewomen came out strong with 12 kills against the Saint Mary’s Huskies Jan. 31 to win the first set 25-17, but it wasn’t enough to defeat the top-ranked team.

Saint Mary’s narrowly won the second set 25-23 and defeated Acadia again in the third, 25-17. The Axewomen battled back in the fourth set with a 25-13 win, forcing a fifth set to decide the game between the two teams for the second time this season. However, the Huskies prevailed to win the final set 15-8.

Acadia’s Jazmin Prest had 13 kills for Acadia and Hilary Monette had 24 digs. Marissa Chin gave a strong performance for Acadia with four kills, four service aces and seven digs.

Acadia is in action at Memorial this weekend to wrap up the regular season.
