Berwick man sentenced to jail time

A Berwick man has been sentenced to jail time, to be followed by probation, after pleading guilty earlier in February to charges of assault and utter- ing a death threat.

Darren Vincent Rivest, 46, changed his pleas to guilty to the two charges on Feb. 11. The matters were adjourned to Feb. 18 for sentencing and dispositio­n on the remaining charges and Rivest was remanded in custody.

Judge Claudine MacDonald sentenced Rivest to four months in custody on each count, to be served concurrent­ly, followed by one year of probation. The court imposed a 14-month firearm prohibitio­n order against Rivest in relation to both counts. Charges of willfully damaging a person’s property to a value not exceeding $5,000 and failing to comply with his undertakin­g were dismissed.

Rivest committed the offences Berwick on Jan. 6.

Conditiona­l discharge for storing firearm in careless manner

Adrian Phillip Ross Sweet, 32, of Morden, has been handed a conditiona­l discharge with probation for storing a firearm in a careless manner. Several other assault and firearm-related charges have been dismissed.

Sweet changed his plea to guilty to the careless storage charge on Feb. 11. Judge Alan Tufts handed Sweet a conditiona­l sentence with 12 months of probation, including 25 hours of community service work or a $250 donation to the Red Door in lieu. Sweet was ordered to make an additional $400 donation to the Red Door and was fined a $100 victim surcharge.

Sweet had pleaded not guilty in July 2014 to all charges against him, including assault, using a firearm in committing an assault, pointing a firearm and recklessly dischargin­g a firearm. All counts aside from the careless storage charge were dismissed on Feb. 11.

Sweet committed the offence in Morden on March 21, 2014.

Breathalys­er offence

Lendall James Melanson, 64, of Plympton, has been fined for operating a motor vehicle while his blood alcohol level exceeded the legal limit.

Melanson was not present in Kentville provincial court on Feb. 10 but his legal counsel appeared and pleaded guilty on his behalf.

Judge Claudine MacDonald fined Melanson a total of $2,600 and imposed a one-year driving prohibitio­n.

Melanson committed the offence in Kingston on Oct. 1, 2014. The legal blood alcohol limit is 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood. Melanson gave breathalys­er readings of 170 and 170.

Fine, probation for damaging property

Kate-Lynn Marie Kaiser, 22, of New Ross, has been fined and sentenced to probation for willfully damaging a person’s property to a value not exceeding $5,000 and fined for failing to attend court as directed.

Kaiser pleaded guilty to the charges on Feb. 9. Judge Claudine MacDonald fined Kaiser $13 and sentenced her to six months of probation for damaging property and fined her $65 for failing to attend court as directed by a judge.

Kaiser committed the offences in Aylesford on July 27 and in Kentville on Oct. 27, 2014.
