Closing date set for current Kentville library branch
The long-awaited relocation of Kentville’s public library is about to begin.
Members of the public have until Aug. 6 to visit the current Kentville Library branch at 95 Cornwallis St. one last time.
The library will be closed from Aug. 7 to 14, but Annapolis Valley Regional Library ( AVRL) intends to operate a smaller satellite site from a temporary location until the renovations are complete at the library’s new home, the former United Church at 440 Main St. in Kentville.
A press release issued by AVRL July 21 says more details about the opening of the temporary library will be announced Aug. 15.
“There will be no overdue fines charged on items due during the closure period. The book drop will remain open at the current location during the closure week. Items can be re- turned to the book drop or to any other AVRL location,” said Angela Reynolds, community engagement co- ordinator for AVRL.
The Mad Science: Fire & Ice program scheduled for Aug. 9 will be relocated to the Upper Recreation Centre at 354 Main St., next to Kentville’s town hall. Participants in the Summer Reading Club will be able to pick up fast passes and other prizes at any AVRL location, including the Bookmobile, she added.
The Town of Kentville and Municipality of the County of Kings have announced that the two municipal units will work together to provide funding for the new library space.
The funding agreement is not finalized, but Kings County Council’s committee of the whole recently discussed contributing $32,000 plus annual cost of living increases. The final amount must be approved during a council meeting.
“A formal lease arrangement with the property owners of the new space cannot be signed until the funding from the county is in hand,” said Kentville Mayor Dave Corkum in a press release issued by the town July 19.
The library must be relocated to allow for the green, steel bridge over the neighbouring Cornwallis River to be replaced.
