Willing to get wet?

Middleton offering free canoe and kayak rentals

- BY ASHLEY THOMPSON

Adventure seekers looking to get better acquainted with the Annapolis River are in luck.

Middleton Recreation is offering free canoe and kayak rentals from Riverside Park seven days a week.

“The Annapolis River is a beautiful place to enjoy canoeing or kayaking because of its peaceful environment and prominent wildlife. The river tucks you away from the hustle and bustle of town and allows you to enjoy some beautiful scenes,” said Connor McCabe, Middleton’s adventure programmer.

“Sightings of beavers, muskrats, fish, eagles and dragonflies are all very common and, if you’re lucky, you may even spot a deer along the bank.”

Middleton has four canoes and six kayaks that can be loaned out between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Riverside Park is both the entry point and final destination, as there is no shuttle service available.

“The best part about the canoeing and kayaking program we offer is that it’s absolutely free. This allows everyone the ability to access it. In very few places will you find a free rental program like the one here in Middleton, making it a unique attraction to our town for visitors and locals alike,” said McCabe.

The program is available for paddlers of all skill levels, and beginners are encouraged to try the guided tour group outings starting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday evenings.

“They can come out and give canoeing or kayaking a go while having the support of the group and some basic instruction and safety tips. This allows them to enjoy the experience of canoeing or kayaking in a safer environment than if they were to go alone,” said McCabe. “Willingness to get wet is recommended.”

Canoes, kayaks and safety equipment can be reserved by calling McCabe at 902825-8143. From Aug. 18 to Sept. 29, contact active living co-ordinator Stephanie Wadden at the same number.

“This makes for an easily accessible program that is not only a great way to stay active, but is the perfect summer activ- ity to enjoy the sunshine and venture outdoors,” said McCabe.

“Get the kids off the couch, pick up a paddle and come out for a beautiful trip down the Annapolis River. Reserve soon, as boats are being booked up fast.”
