- WOLFVILLE

A dominating 84-0 win over the Saint Mary’s Huskies have put the rugby Axewomen up 2-1 on their season.

“We came to practice working on the fundamentals and basic skills to make us better for this game and for future games,” player of the game Michaela Haley told Acadia Athletics.

Emma Pfleiderer, Nichole Pahl, Annie Kennedy and Natasha Johnson each added two trys as part of Acadia’s winning effort.

Just three weeks remain in the regular season, with Acadia on the road to meet first place St. FX in Antigonish Oct. 2.

Men’s soccer

It was a win and a loss for the soccer Axemen on a New Brunswick road trip Sept. 24 and 25.

The University of New Brunswick’s Jose Lopez slipped the lone goal of the Sept. 25 game against Acadia keeper Pietro Nottegar, who made four saves for Acadia during the game.

It was a different story for Aca- dia Sept. 24, which commanded a 5-0 win over Moncton. Matthew Berrigan had a single marker while Travis Fenning and Cooper Coats each had two goals and an assist in the winning effort.

Women’s soccer

The soccer Axewomen had a 6-1 win over Moncton Sept. 24, then played to a 1-1 draw against UNB Sept. 25.

Two of Acadia’s goals against Moncton came from Meghan Earle, while Kinstella Noseworthy- Smith, Katie Ross, Gemma LeBlanc and Jenna Howell had the other markers.

Emily Nickerson, with assistance from Ross, had the Acadia goal against UNB.

Football loss

The Montreal Carabins showed exactly why they are ranked first by the CIS as they routed Acadia 63-1 Sept. 24. The Carabins have out-scored opponents 207-25 so far in four regular season games including the win over the Axemen.

Acadia’s only scoring came from a rouge from Jeffrey Beattie with a 29-yard field goal that went wide.

With the loss, Acadia is now 1-2 in the season and will travel to Sackville, N.B. Oct. 1 to take on the winless Mount Allison Mounties.

Hockey pre-season play

Acadia won two pre-season match-ups and lost a third.

On Sept. 21, Acadia defeated Saint Mary’s 6-4, but lost 3-2 to Concordia Sept. 23.

The Axemen eked out their revenge the following night, with an 8-4 win over Acadia. Kyle Farrell led the charge for Acadia with two goals in the first, while Chance Braid had a hat trick. Other Axemen goals came from Remy Giftopoulos, Boston Leier and Daniel Pettersson.

The Axemen will spend this weekend south of the border to take on Northeastern and Providence in NCAA exhibition play and then return home to open their regular season Oct. 7 at home against the Saint Mary’s Huskies.
