‘It’s all hard work’

Central Kings goes 3-0 for the season after win over NKEC

The Central Kings Gators seem to have found the magic formula it takes to win football games.

But there’s no magic to it, said head coach Larry Priestnall.

“It’s all hard work,” he said. “The boys are playing well. The coaches are coaching the boys up. They’re playing good football, they really are.”

The Cambridge football team remains undefeated after three games, two of them against their rivals at Northeast Kings.

The last time the two teams met in Cambridge, Central Kings dominated NKEC with a 35-6 win. The match-up was much closer this time, with CK eking out a 7-0 win Sept. 25 in Canning.

“We’ve had three big games so far – NKEC back-to-back and Avon View, and we came out with three wins. We can’t ask for more than that, “Priestnall said. “Once we started going on all cylinders – and our offence sputtered a bit today, but our defence played a fantastic game.”

Central Kings was on the point of scoring several times during the game, said Priestnall, but couldn’t quite do it.

“We were on the one-yard line and we fumbled, there was a field goal over there and we were short manned, so there were a few mistakes by us, the coaches, I guess you could say,” he said. “NKEC is a tough team and they’re a tough team to play. All our games are going to be close. There’s not going to be any runaways between us and NKEC, that’s for sure.”

Titans head coach Reg Ogilvie was much happier with his team’s performance against CK this time around.

“It was a much better game,” Ogilvie said. “They beat us by one play, a long kick that flipped the field and we couldn’t get the field back. That’s all. It’s one play here, one play there.”

NKEC is on the road Sept. 30 to play in Antigonish. Both teams will be hungry for a win, as the team from Dr. JH Gillis High School is also 1-2 for the season.

“They lost by three to Avon View today (Sept. 25), so they’re desperate like us,” Ogilvie said. “It’ll be a battle again, but we’re involved every time. It’s never an easy day.”

With only a few days to prepare before the Antigonish road trip, Ogilvie plans to reinforce the coaching the NKEC players have received all season.

“If they play like this, like they did here today, we’ve got nothing to worry about, we’re good,” he said.
