Acadia athletes out in full force

A number of Acadia sports took place on the weekend.

Here’s a look at how our local teams did.

Hockey

The Axemen beat Dalhousie 3-2 in Wolfville Oct. 14.

Michael Clarke, Chance Braid and Kyle Farrell scored for Acadia while Braid, Remy Giftopoulo­s, Nick Betz, Geoff Schemitsch and Brett Thompson recorded assists.

The following night, Acadia lost 5-3 to St. FX.

St. FX came out strong with unanswered goals by Kristoff Kontos and Bryson Clanfrone in the first period.

The visiting Antigonish team added another marker at 7:34 in the second, while Acadia’s Liam Maaskant put the Axemen on the board at 14:43. Holden Cook netted a fourth goal for St. FX in the last minute of play.

Acadia’s Remy Giftopoulo­s scored twice in the third period to make it a 4-3 battle, but an unassisted Adam Stevens sealed the deal by netting the X-Men’s fifth goal with only 40 seconds remaining on the clock.

The Axemen topped St. Mary’s 4-1 Oct. 7, but lost their first showdown again St. FC 4-1 Oct. 8.

Rugby

The Axewomen trounced St. Mary 74-0 Oct. 16. Natasha Johnson leads Acadia’s scoring with eight trys so far this season and Annie Kennedy has recorded 16 conversion­s.

Soccer

The Axewomen tied a hard fought match against the visit- ing St. FX 2-2. Michelle Pryde and Candace Conrad scored for Acadia.

The Axemen, on the other hand, beat St. FX 2-0 at Raymond Field Oct. 16. Tylor Connolly and Matthew Berrigan scored for Acadia.

Swimming

Acadia hosted the Jack Scholz Swim Meet and the team finished in second overall to open the season. The women’s team finished fourth and the men’s were second to Dalhousie. The Axemen won the 200- metre medley relay.

Football

The hosting Axemen lost a tough 15-13 battle decided in the final seconds of the game against Mount Allison. Brandon Jennings recorded multiple field goals for Acadia. Acadia’s Player of the Game, Cody Cluett, was good for 242 yards of passing and running back rookie Danial Obiang covered 79 yards with 16 carries.
