Kings Fiddlers make a joyful sound

The Kings Fiddlers held a ‘Big Fiddle-Do’ at the Canning Lions Hall on Oct. 22 with close to a hundred musicians playing.

Old-time fiddle music prevailed with tunes like Crooked Stovepipe, Battle of Glencoe and LaHave Ferry. The host club played an entire set of original tunes, written by Keith Ross, Art Knowlton, Ron Good- win, Roy DeAdder and Bev Reynolds.

Five fiddling clubs from different parts of Nova Scotia attended, coming from Dartmouth, Lunenburg County, Bedford and Halifax with fiddles, guitars and pianos.

This year the three- hour afternoon session was open to the public. Eleven baskets of food donations were received for the village food bank.

Bombadils coming to Kingsport

The Bombadils, who made a hit at the Deep Roots Festival a few years ago, are touring with their new album, New Shoes, and on Oct. 28 will perform at the Lloyd Memorial Centre, Kingsport.

Together since 2009 as a looseknit group of McGill music students, they got together to play Irish pub tunes on evenings and weekends. formed in 1987 by a group of musicians who wanted to preserve old- time fiddle music and traditions in the Annapolis Valley. It has more than 40 members and new members are actively supported, says president Art Knowlton.

Meetings are held at the Wolfville Lions Hall on the second and fourth Thursday of each month, except for July and August. New members and spectators are always welcome.

Learn with Boucher

A weekend painting workshop is lined up with Annapolis County artist Wayne Boucher Oct. 29-30.

The two-day workshop will run from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the ARTsPLACE Gallery in Annapolis Royal.

This workshop will enable participan­ts to express their own ideas through the use of paint.

The workshop focuses on the effective use of materials, tools, critical thinking, editing images and the overall process of formulatin­g meaning through paint.

Boucher will work one-on-one with the participan­ts and facilitate a group critique for constructi­ve evaluation.

Workshop enrollment is limited to 12 participan­ts, plus four places for Saturday only.
