Acadia swimmers return from ‘fast and furious’ nationals
Three Acadia swimmers recently returned home after going stroke for stroke with some fierce competition.
Sprint specialist Brett Liem, breaststroke competitor Hannah Doiron and flyer Alison Maceachern all qualified for the U Sports Swimming Championships hosted in Sherbrooke, Quebec Feb. 24-26.
“The meet was fast and furious and the three Acadia swimmers showed great resilience. The two girls were coming off a very successful AUS championships two weeks ago and were trying to hold on to a double rest and taper. Despite that challenge, both girls swam to the level of the competition,” said coach Gary Macdonald.
Doiron overcame an injury from the last day of the AUS championships to achieve lifetime bests in the 200 metre breast and 200 IM events.
“The 200 breast was a varsity record,” said Macdonald.
“Alison Maceachern was also pushing herself to the limit with one outstanding swim in her specialty, the 200 Fly. She qualified for the “B” final but unfortunately was disqualified for a minor infraction. After a protest, the disqualification was upheld.”
Macdonald was also pleased with the performance of the sole male swimmer representing Acadia at nationals.
“Brett Liem showed his true stripes with one outstanding 50 freestyle. After a medium morning swim and just missing the “A” final, Brett rose to the challenge by winning the 50 Free “B” final from lane one. His time was his lifetime best time and a new varsity record,” the coach said, adding this marked the fourth time Liem topped his personal best this season.
“It was a very competitive meet and certainly showed that Canadian swimming is getting faster every year. The Axemen are looking forward to next season with the prospect of 10 new recruits adding to their already strong team.”
