Greenwood to celebrate Canada Day in style

- BY MURIEL WEST

The Village of Greenwood sits almost in the middle of the Annapolis Valley, between historic Annapolis Royal, the first capital of Nova Scotia, and Grand Pre, home of Evangeline.

For years Greenwood has hosted Canada Day celebrations but this year, being Canada’s 150th birthday, Greenwood has partnered with neighbouring communities to host a Canada Day worthy of this very special milestone. Record crowds are expected to attend. Events are planned for the entire day. After dark, spectacular fireworks will end this celebration.

One of the many features of this grand party is an outdoor market of local artisans from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Stalls of approximately 12’ x 12’ will be available for $30 for crafters of all sorts to display their unique and creative work. Crafters must supply their own chairs/tables and shelters/canopies to provide protection from the weather. No electricity will be available to vendors.

Artisans may wish to book their stalls sooner, rather than later, to be sure to get a placement. Do this by emailing for an application form: karl.west@ns.sympatico. ca. There is space planned to accommodate more than 50 venders. Greenwood’s Canada Day 2017 affords these creative people a wonderful venue to promote their business within the local area.

As well as the artisan market, July 1 is packed full of planned activities. A flag raising attended by local dignitaries and a community breakfast at the Kingston Legion will begin the day. An early morning Bike and Stride is being organized to include folks of all ages to get their juices pumping and enjoy some physical activity. Mid-morning, an historic procession will acknowledge the various segments of our society who contributed to the building of our local community over the past 150 years. Of course, there will be cake. Live entertainment, soccer matches, an antique car show, a trivia challenge, facepainting and other activities for the kiddies are just some of the things planned. Concession stands will be on site to tempt the taste buds.

The committee planning this event believes that the Village of Greenwood and its neighbouring villages and hamlets can work together to promote all that is good about our great country. If you are eager to join forces with those planning this celebration, contact hparker40@hotmail. com.
