Something for everyone
Kingsport Gala Days undeterred by weather
The community of Kingsport certainly knows how to host a gala.
Kingsport Gala Days offered something for all ages throughout the weekend.
On Saturday, artists got out in the morning doing watercolours for Paint the Town and then displayed their works at the Lloyd Community Centre. Historian Dan Conlin also had his Dominion Atlantic Railway display set up.
An ecumenical spirit prevailed at Emmanuel United Church. The host church cooked fish chowder, while the women of St. Thomas Anglican Church served strawberry shortcake.
Nearby tarot readings took place under a canopy, but the concert by the Kings County Concert Band had to be relocated to the United Church.
Parade marshall Rodney Bent acknowledged the soggy weather had an impact on the parade. He said the pipe and drum band couldn’t take part because of the effect of rain on the pitch of the instruments.
According to Bent, George and June Barkhouse were honorary parade generals due to their contribution of the community centre building to the Kingsport Community Association.
Bent also noted many volunteers have given hours to upgrade the centre and make it accessible.
On Sunday, to close out the weekend of events, one highlight was a sandcastle building competition. Other events that drew crowds were a canoe and kayak gathering and entertainment by popular local band, Test of Time, which was followed by fireworks.
