Football events conclude successfully in Wolfville
Two weeks of football action have ended successfully at Acadia University in Wolfville.
The Atlantic Cup concluded on Raymond Field July 21 and the two Nova Scotia teams finished well, according to Gary Linthorne, president of Football Nova Scotia.
In the bronze medal game Nova Scotia Blue defeated Prince Edward Island with a score of 44 – 30, he said. Then there was a tight 46 – 38 game between Nova Scotia White and New Brunswick.
Leading up to the medal game for the U16 Eastern Canadian Challenge, Linthorne said, Saskatchewan beat New Brunswick and the medal final saw Nova Scotia come out on top, trouncing Ontario 35-21.
Linthorne described each match as a mini game with two 12-minute halves. He said he was pleased to see the province end up with three medals, including two gold.
“We were well supported by locals and parents,” he suggested. “There was a packed house for the final game.”
All stars from the tournament will be invited to the International Bowl next January in Texas. According to Linthorne, the Nova Scotia coaches will be selecting team members in the near future.
“We could not be happier,” he suggested. “We’ve had two weeks of beautiful weather and good turnouts.”
While the heat last week was oppressive, the Football Nova Scotia president said, it only troubled a few players.
“We had a tight schedule due to the Gunn Baldursson,” he added. “We were glad the thunder held off during the gold medal game.”
