Annapolis District RCMP are looking for informatio­n on a close call at the Annapolis Valley Exhibition Grounds in Lawrenceto­wn that could have resulted in disaster.

A candle was found in a barn and if it hadn’t gone out on its own could have set the place on fire. Was it a thoughtles­s oversight or attempted arson? Police don’t know – yet.

That was one of numerous calls to police from July 17 to 24.

They dealt with 133 calls including 29 that were 911 related, some break-and-enters, accidents, acts of mischief, and the case in Middleton where somebody drove a car into the bowl of the skateboard park.

Police also handed out speeding tickets and conducted numerous checkstops.

Following are a few of the calls for service:

-- July 17 at 9:52 p.m. at Wilmot. Police stopped a vehicle on Arthur Lane. The driver was charged with driving while their license was revoked. The driver also received a ticket for driving without insurance. The person will appear in court at a later date to answer to both charges.

-- July 18 at 6:16 p.m. at Round Hill. Police stopped a vehicle for speeding on Highway 101. The driver was charged and if found guilty will pay a fine of $410. Police stopped 21 other vehicles for speeding in the county during the week.

-- July 19 at 10:04 a.m. at Cornwallis. Police conducted a radar enforcemen­t checkstop. Twenty vehicles were checked and three summary offense tickets were issued. One written warning and three verbal warnings were also issued. Seven other checkstops were conducted throughout the county during the week.

-- July 19 at 10:58 a.m. at Lawrenceto­wn. Police received a complaint that sometime in the last few days someone had been in one of the barns at the exhibition grounds. The culprits lit a candle and left it burning but the candle went out before it could cause any damage. Police have entered into an investigat­ion including neighbourh­ood inquiries.
