Ax­e­women split week­end road trip with tie and win

The Ax­e­women soc­cer team set­tled for a 1-1 tie on the is­land ver­sus the feisty UPEI Pan­thers.

On a 29th minute cor­ner set play, Ax­e­woman Katie Ross con­nected with an on­com­ing Can­dace Con­rad who took it with the head, beat­ing keeper Amanda Stanyer for the early 1-0 ad­van­tage.

Just two min­utes later, Macvar­ish raced past the Aca­dia (11-1) de­fence and squeezed a shot past goal­tender Sarah Charnock, knot­ting the score at one apiece.

Stanyer played big in net for the Pan­thers, es­pe­cially in the sec­ond half, where she de­nied two Ax­e­women scor­ing threats, in­clud­ing a div­ing save in ex­tra time to pre­serve the 1-1 draw.

The Ax­e­women out-shot the Pan­thers 14-3.

In their sec­ond game of a two­day road trip, the Ax­e­women handed the Mount Al­li­son Moun­ties their fourth loss of the 2017 sea­son.

Aca­dia took con­trol early in the game with their speed and smart de­ci­sions. Katie Ross of the Ax­e­women scored the first goal, fol­lowed by a header by goal by Emily Nick­er­son, to com­mence the sec­ond half with a 2-0 lead over the Moun­ties.

Aca­dia’s Jenna How­ell scored early in the sec­ond half, giv­ing the Ax­e­women a 3-0 lead and lock­ing in the win for the Ax­e­women.

The Ax­e­women im­prove to 2-1-1, while the Moun­ties will con­tinue a search for their first win of the early AUS sea­son. Aca­dia will head to Cape Bre­ton for a one game road trip on Fri­day ver­sus the Capers and then re­turn on Sun­day to host the Monc­ton Aigles Bleus start­ing at 1 p.m.
