Axewomen, Axemen collect soccer wins heading into Thanksgivi­ng

The Acadia Axewomen used two second-half goals to top the Saint Mary’s Huskies 3-0 Sunday afternoon in AUS women’s soccer action in Halifax. The win was the last game before the Thanksgivi­ng break.

Striker Jenna Boudreau scored the eventual game winner in the 23rd minute. Midfielder Alexandra Scovil opened the second half scoring in the 57th minute.

The Axewomen added their third goal in the 75th minute on a needle threading pass from Holly Buckler, which found its way through the Huskies box to the foot of Jenna Howell, who tapped in her second goal of the season for a 3-0 lead.

Acadia keeper Sarah Charnock grabbed the win with a save and improved her record to 4-1-1 on the year.

Ashely Blank picked up the loss and made 13 saves for the Huskies.

In the following men’s game, the Axemen scored twice within the first 20 minutes en route to a 3-1-win against the men’s Huskies.

Tyler Connolly opened the Acadia scoring, pouncing on a save from Saint Mary’s goalie Christian Oxner in the fifth minute.

Connolly set up the Axemen’s second goal at the 20th minute on a give and go with Cooper Coats, who scored his sixth goal of the year.

A Saint Mary’s own goal off a shot from Coats put Acadia up 3-0 in the 37th minute.

Darien Rolle replied for the Huskies with his second goal of the year in the 68th minute.

Acadia outshot SMU 7-6 in the contest and held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks and a 4-3 save margin.

Acadia keeper Nic Jefferies improved to 4-2-1 on the season.

Acadia travels to St. FX Oct. 14 for a 5:15 p.m. match against the 5-1-1 St. FX X-men.
