Wins on the road for volleyball Axewomen

The visiting Acadia Axewomen handed weekend host UNB Varsity Reds a 3-1 loss (23-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-16) on Nov. 4 and a 3-0 loss (25-20, 25-18, 25-19) on Nov. 5.

Fifth-year setter Sarah Ross had 10 kills and 20 digs to lead the Axewomen in the first of a two-match weekend.

Kailey Evans added 13 digs and was named the Subway Player of the Match.

“I think that we played well as a unit after the first set, and that’s what we’ve been really working on in practice lately,” said Evans. “Today we really came together and played as a unit.”

Kristen Burns led the Varsity Reds, recording 10 kills and 12 digs, while Kelsey Bond had a match-high 21 digs.

With the win, Acadia improves its record to 1-2 while UNB falls to 0-2 after the first match of the weekend.

The Acadia Axewomen completed a weekend sweep of the UNB Varsity Reds, scoring a 3-0 win on Nov. 5.

Lauryn Renzella led the Axewomen with 12 kills and 10 digs. She was named the Subway Player of the Match.

“It feels really good,” said Renzella, of the team’s 2-0 weekend. “It feels like all the hard work we put in, in the gym, has really paid off this week.”

Sarah Ross added a dozen kills. Adora Rooyakkers led the Varsity Reds. She had 10 kills and 11 digs and Kristen Burns added 14 digs.

Acadia used a 4-0 run in the first set to build a 17-10 lead, on route to their 25-20 win.

“It definitely boosts confidence,” said Renzella. “But we’re going to hit the gym hard and hit practice hard and do everything we can to get ready for next weekend.”

With the win, Acadia is now 2-2, while the Varsity Reds are 0-3. Acadia will visit Dalhousie Nov. 12.
