Star of Christmas

Favourite seasonal commercial making a comeback this year

- BY LAWRENCE POWELL THE SPECTATOR

Nova Scotians of a certain age will remember the famous Sobeys Star of Christmas television commercial that became an instant hit way back when and is now a household-name seasonal jingle.

The original has appeared numerous times on social media in the last few years and few can help smiling and singing along when they hear it. Hitting the ‘Like’ or ‘Share’ button is automatic.

Well, it’s back and it’s causing quite a stir in Sobeys and affiliated stores both in the aisles and online as the local grocery giant offers the chance for its stores to win $5,000 for the community.

Tanya Knickle, Foodland owner in Middleton, took up the challenge Nov. 25 with help from staff and community members who rehearsed the song twice in front of local shoppers and then recorded it on video to enter the contest.

“All the Sobeys, Foodlands across Atlantic Canada are doing a contest for Star of Christmas, taking the old Sobeys Star of Christmas commercial and making it into a community contest,” said Knickle. “So all the stores that want to participate are doing a singalong of their own, making it their very own. We, of course, here at Foodland in Middleton have done our best to bring that and make it a great video. We’re going to post it onto a website and post details as soon as we know of them.”

She said voting will be from Nov. 30 to Dec. 13th and the store in Nova Scotia with the most votes will win $5,000 for the community.

“We’re very excited,” said Knickle. “They did amazing. This group was awesome. This group is going to do it. Foodland can win $5,000 with your help for the community of Middleton. I just think that’s amazing.”

Among the singers was Middleton Mayor Sylvester Atkinson.

The Middleton Foodland event turned into a festive Christmas party with cookie decorating, free food, and for those who signed the release form to be in the video there was a chance to win a $50 gift certificate.

Nobody needed to be coaxed into it. And when it came time to sing the song it was almost flawless on the first take.
