Axewomen volleyball team continues to nab wins
For some teams, the Christmas break can allow some rust to build, but the Axewomen Volleyball team has been on fire since its three wins at the AUS tournament prior to the Christmas Holidays.
On a six-game winning streak since Nov. 18, the Axewomen improve their AUS regular season record to 8-4 with a three-set sweep of the visiting Moncton Aigles Bleus.
Only the last set was close as a young and rebuilding Moncton squad struggled to defend the Axewomen’s attack.
Leading the attack was firstyear outside hitter Lucy Glencarter who captured the honour as the Subway Player of the Game with an astounding hitting efficiency of 0.500, 11 kills, two service aces and 15 points. Plus, if her offensive skills didn’t impress you, she added 12 digs and two solo blocks to her defensive performance.
Combining for 36 kills and a hitting efficiency of 0.255, the Lucy Glen-carter, a first-year outside hitter from Toronto, led the attack for the volleyball Axewomen against Moncton. Acadia swept the Aigles Bleus 3-0.
Axewomen scored 55 points in the three-set win.
A first set win of 25-11 and a hitting efficiency of 0.407, set the
tone for the first two games. The Axewomen continued the offensive barrage with a 25-14 second set victory.
While Acadia never allowed the Aigles Blues to lead throughout the three-game match except in the opening minutes of each set, Moncton did make the third and final set close, trailing the Axewomen by one point several times.
At 16-14 Acadia, second-year middle, Daniella Trodel posted a kill that would open the floodgates to an eventual 25-17 third set victory and 3-0 match win.
Other notable performances by the Axewomen include Sarah Ross and Lauryn Renzella, posting seven kills each and Regan Herrington’s 29 sets and 6 kills. Libero Kailey Evans added 18 digs.
Moncton’s Emilie Landry was named the Aigles Bleus’ Player of the Game. Teammate Christelle Bertin had a team-high seven kills.
The Axewomen head to Saint Mary’s on Jan. 26 and then visit Moncton on Jan. 28. Moncton hosts Saint Mary’s and Acadia next Saturday and Sunday.
