In the first of two games in Newfoundland, the Acadia Axewomen secured a 91-68 road victory over the Memorial Seahawks last Saturday.

Acadia outscored Memorial 23-11 in the second quarter; at the half, the Axewomen held a 46-35 lead.

The third quarter was a solid performance for both teams. Acadia had difficulty keeping their lead during times of pressure. The Axewomen may have been scoring well overall, but they left many points on the floor with multiple missed layups in transition. For the Sea-hawks, their defense struggled at times, allowing too many secondchance points and easy penetration buckets.

Senior guard Paloma Anderson posted 22 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists. Her defensive contribution was even more impressive, forcing eight turnovers on Memorial and earning Subway Player of the Game commendations. Ellen Hatt had a strong performance as well, pouring in a healthy 27 points off the bench for the Axewomen.

Brooklyn Wright was the bright spot for the Sea-hawks, netting 26 in the game, with 14 coming in the first quarter. Hallie Nickerson provided another dose of offense for the Hawks, taking a spot in the starting rotation and dropping 16 points.

The Axewomen completed a weekend sweep over the Memorial Sea-hawks on Sunday afternoon with a 90-79 victory in game two.

After a disappointing loss on Saturday evening, Memorial looked to rally against the Acadian Axewomen in the second game of the weekend series. The Sea-hawks had great difficulty finding their offense, forcing up shots late in the shot clock, missing open opportunities, and struggling to get back after mistakes. All of these things culminated in a dominating first quarter for the Axewomen as they went on a 10-2 run, finishing the quarter up 26-13. Axewomen led at the half, 44-32.

Paloma Anderson was once again a standout performer finishing with another doubledouble, 29 points and 10 rebounds; a huge feat for one of the smallest players on the floor. Despite her small stature, Anderson had a massive impact on the weekend series. She now ranks in the top spot for points in a season, and free throws made for Acadia all-time.

Lindsay Taylor was the top scorer for the Sea-hawks, posting 25 points on 8/13 shooting from the field, and an impressive 6/8 from downtown.

Memorial now stands at the .500 mark this season, at seven wins and losses.

The Axewomen, who improve to 13-1 and sit first in the AUS standings, clinched a playoff berth. Acadia hosts Saint Mary’s this Thursday in a rescheduled game from early January.
