Record-setting season

Final win over Cape Breton sees Axewomen break yet another record

-

The Axewomen and Axemen concluded their respective AUS regular seasons in Sydney, N.S. matched up against the host Cape Breton Capers for one game worth four-points in the standings.

The Axewomen posted a 97-93 win over the Capers, making up for a loss against Cape Breton only weeks ago. Acadia finished the regular season with Acadia record setting 18 wins and two losses, eclipsing the previous record set by the 2011-2012 Axewomen of 17-3.

The Axewomen maintained a lead at the end of the opening quarter and at halftime but the Capers did hold a 10-point margin with six minutes remaining in the second quarter – the largest Cape Breton lead in the game.

Just before the midpoint of the fourth quarter, a pair of free throws from Caper Valentina Primossi gave Cape Breton their first lead of the second half, which was a part of a 20-2 run for the home team. But the Axewomen rebounded, going on a 10-0 run themselves, which was led by Paloma Anderson.

Graduating senior Caper Alison Keough lit up the Sullivan Field House one last time with 27 points and 6 rebounds. Teammate Primossi had 13 points with 8 assists and Sandra Amoah had 12 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 5 steals.

Paloma Anderson came in clutch for the first place Axewomen, scoring a game-high 29 points, including 10 in the games final quarter. Haley Mcdonald also had a great night, scoring 18 points, including 3-5 on three pointers.

The Axewomen first place record gives them a bye at the AUS Championship weekend in Halifax at the Scotiabank Centre. Their first game will be against the winner of Memorial versus Saint Mary’s at 1 p.m. on March 3.
