Making a splash
Aylesford Lions’ Red Cross Learn to Swim is a success
The Aylesford and District Lions Club has a long history of community involvement benefitting people of all ages.
One of the programs they provide is the Red Cross swim program currently held at Klahanie Campground.
Although the exact date couldn’t be verified, between 35 and 40 years ago two members of the Aylesford and District Lions Club graciously offered to donate the use of their private swimming pools to start a Learn to Swim program in Aylesford. The Lions hired Red Cross certified instructors and the program began.
It was such a success, that within a short time, the Lions club purchased a permanent pool and placed it at Klahanie Campground on Victoria Road in Aylesford,
where the program has continued ever since.
The 2018 program currently offers two sessions, one starting in early July and a second in early August. The sessions consist of bi-weekly classes for four weeks (eight lessons in all). The classes are designed for various age levels and degrees of proficiency, ranging from adult and tot to badge Level 10.
Level 1, the Learn to Swim Program for children five to eight years old, has proven to be the most popular; however, some children come back year after year gaining more skills, and earning higher levels.
Registration for the 2018 program will be June 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. and June 21 between 6 and 8 p.m. for the first session, with classes beginning July 3.
Registration is held at the Aylesford and District Lions Hall, 2160 Hwy #1 Auburn.
