-

Newspapers Atlantic has recognized the efforts of journalists at the Annapolis Valley Register, Valley Journal-advertiser and Tricounty Vanguard.

The Saltwire Network weekly newspapers from southwestern Nova Scotia were the big winners at the Newspapers Atlantic awards June 1. Nominated in a number of categories, the Valley papers were the recipient of several prestigious awards.

The Annapolis Valley Register was the winner in the general excellence category for its circulation, beating out its sister paper, the Valley Journal-advertiser, along with Acadie Nouvelle. Judges said the Register “hit on all the high points: an impressive selection of local community news and content, an editorial/opinion page accessible to local letter writers and better-than-average photography.”

Colin Chisholm, a reporter out of the Valley Journal-advertiser’s Windsor office, won two individual awards out of the five nominations he received: outstanding sports story for his Living the Dream feature on boxer Wyatt Sanford, beating out two other Valley Journal-advertiser finalists; and outstanding resources story for his look into a study of fish in the Avon River.

Carole Morris-underhill, also out of the Windsor office, was the recipient of the best sports photo award for her image of a rugby game, while Sara Ericsson, now a reporter in the Kentville office, was the winner of the best feature photo award for her image of siblings meeting for the first time in more than 50 years, a photo that was taken while she was previously working with the Tri-county Vanguard in Digby.

Ashley Thompson, a reporter in the Kentville office of the Annapolis Valley Register, was the winner of the outstanding feature story category for her piece on Lyndon Fuller’s disappearance almost 30 years ago.

Tri-county Vanguard editor Tina Comeau was also recognized for excellence, winning the outstanding investigative story and outstanding news photo awards.

Other Saltwire Network papers to win at the awards include the Carbonear Compass from Newfoundland, which was the recipient of general excellence in its circulation class, and the Amherst News, which won best cartoon.
