Bear River woman hitting the stage at King’s Theatre

Nova Scotia debut of Hold Mommy’s Cigarette set for Aug. 11, 12

The Assembly Room at the Grand View Manor was a busy spot on July 20. It was a celebration of Audrey Boylan’s 85th birthday. There were many family members and friends and Cottage Street neighbours there to wish her the best. Audrey’s children Kevin and Gail were there as well as grandson Chris and Taylor with their three children, granddaughters Katie and Mary Beth and Audrey’s sister Gail from Chester. They are just some I noticed.

Mary Dean (Bligh) had a few words to say on the neighbour kids getting together years ago as the Boylans, Blighs and Kervins all lived close together growing up. Kevin thanked everyone on his mom’s behalf for all the people who attended. It was a nice chatty afternoon and of course, there was birthday cake. Hope you had a great day, Audrey and many more happy birthdays.

Wanda Mcgillivray and daughter Kathy, of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta visited with Wanda’s mum, Shirley Irvine, from July 8 until July 23. They visited with other family members and spent lots of time at Donnollan’s Brook.

On Aug. 11 and 12, Shelley Marshall will be making the audience at King’s Theatre laugh, gasp and cry with her award-winning onewoman play, Hold Mommy’s Cigarette.

A new resident of Bear River, Marshall hails from Ontario and brings with her a lifetime of stories and experience in show business that has made her one-woman show a smash hit.

It took 10 years to create the show, which explores her life’s ups and downs, battles and triumphs through a mix of stand-up, improv and theatre. The variations amplify the complex emotions in a way that resonates with the audience and pulls them deeper into the story.

For the past five years, Hold Mommy’s Cigarette has been a sellout success in theatres in Toronto and surrounding cities, receiving gold in the category of Best Theatre Production in 2013, Best New Discovery by Now Magazine, and nominated Best Female Stand Up in Canada by the Canadian Comedy Awards. Marshall has hosted the popular televised Hamilton Music Awards for the past four years.

Marshall is especially proud of the attention the show has contributed in raising mental health awareness.

“I knew creating works of art that expressed my experience, my truth, and my understanding were what would bring a joyful purpose to my life. I feel I not only have an opportunity, but obligations, to convey a message that can help people heal,” she said.

Blazing uncharted trails, this comedic whirlwind won’t be slowing down.

Shows will begin at 7:30 p.m. both nights. Tickets are available at the box office at 902-532-7704 or online at kingstheatre.ca.
