- BY JOSHUA FOOTE

The Acadia Axemen (3-6-0) recently snapped a four-game losing skid with a 2-1 victory over the visiting Dalhousie Tigers.

The Axemen took their final lead of the game thanks to a goal from Subway First Star of the Night, Kyle Farrell.

Acadia opened the scoring incredibly early, with a marker from forward Stephen Harper.

Dalhousie tied the game almost two minutes before the half-way point of the first when forward Jonathan Cyr, who was wide open in front of the Axemen net, took a pass from Jackson Playfair and buried the puck to tie the game at 1-1.

By the end of the first period, the shots were 12-4 for Dalhousie.

Neither team could break the tie in the second period, as the game remained at 1-1 heading into the third.

Acadia’s Farrell broke the tie early in the third on a partial breakaway.

Despite a late power-play and a pulled goalie a few minutes later, the Tigers were unable to answer back in the third.

Axemen goaltender Dawson Carty turned aside 21 of 22 shots, while his Dalhousie counterpart Reilly Picard stopped 24 of 26 shots.

The second and third stars of the night were Dalhousie forward Jackson Playfair and Axemen forward Owen MacDonald, respectively.

In Antigonish Nov. 2, the host StFX X-Men and Acadia Axemen went to a shootout at the Charles V. Keating Centre and it was the hosting X-Men who came out on top with the 4-3 win.

Third year X- Men forward Matt Needham was credited with the game-winning goal in the shootout for the X-Men as he went five-hole. The win lifted the X-Men (7-2-2) into a first-place tie with UNB in the AUS standings. The Axemen (3-6-1) drop to sixth spot.

Despite the loss, the Axemen outshot the X-Men by a 38-15 margin as Carty had 14 saves. Chase Marchand improved to 4-4-0 on the season with 32 saves between the pipes for the X-Men.

Both teams are back on the ice next Nov. 9 in road games. Acadia travels to Halifax to face the Saint Mary’s Huskies, while StFX will be in Fredericton to take on the UNB Reds.
