America votes for best talent

- LINDSEY WARD

On the bright side: the fate of America’s Got Talent’s Season 8 contestants is now out of the hands of judges Howard Stern, Heidi Klum, Melanie Brown and Howie Mandel.

On the other hand: the fate of America’s Got Talent’s Season 8 contestants is now in the hands of America.

We’re not sure which is better, but we’ll find out soon since Tuesday marks the first live episode of the talent show Americans just can’t get enough of (us Canadians don’t mind it so much, either; it’s one of our Top 10 shows right now).

Fair enough, as the competition this season has been stronger than it’s been in several years.

There’s something inspiring about Alexanderia the Great, for example. She’s a devoted suburban mother and wife, but her dream is to become an escape artist.

Turns out she’s quite the momdini, and she’s already proven she can hold her breath under water far longer than Heidi Klum can.

Also on deck: Opera singer Branden James, child death-metal duo Aaralyn & Izzy, levitation performer Special Head, standup comic Kevin Downey Jr., rock band American Hitmen, hand balancing act KriStef Brothers, magician Collins Key, singer Anna Christine and dance groups Fresh Faces, Hype and TellAVision.

If that sounds like a lot of acts to get through, well, it’s only the start of the Top 60 performances. And now it’s up to America to round ’em down. (NBC, City — 10 p.m.)

There is still life left in Who Do You Think You Are? — at least according to TLC. Season 4 kicks off with Kelly Clarkson exploring her family ties with American history and learning her great grandfather, times three, was a wartime hero. (TLC — 7 & 9 p.m.)

When did tap dancing become popular again? You can partly thank So You Think You Can Dance’s hip tappers Aaron, Curtis and Alexis, who are still competing against the many other contemporary types who usually rule the roost on this Emmy-nominated series. The fast-footed trio get a move on during Tuesday’s Top 16 performance episode. (Fox, CTV — 9 p.m.)

A prisoner, a refugee and a ghost walk into a hospital, and ... well, there’s really nothing to joke about on Saving Hope, where Alex (Erica Durance) tends to a violent criminal, Joel (Daniel Gillies) befriends a disfigured man, and Charlie (Michael Shanks) has a run-in with a spirit at the morgue. All in a day’s work. (CTV — 8 p.m.)
